Augmented Reality: Making it virtually real

Augmented Reality: Making it virtually real
Technological advancements have amazed generations of people. It is not only the hardware that has advanced but the software, applications and programs used have also improved over the years.  Animation and film making have many aspects, which when combined together make a perfect product. They include visual effects (VFX), sound & light effects, rendering, flash etc.
What is AR?
Augmented reality (also known as AR) is simply bringing together the real world and an imaginary world in such a way that there is no way to differentiate the artificial from the real. In layman’s term, it is the duplication of world environment on a computer generated, virtual reality. AR supplements the information that is already visible to us by providing more statistics and data, as and when necessary.

How is AR helpful?
AR creates graphics, computer-generated scenarios and virtual depictions of the real world, which complements the actual environment. The detailing and information used and provided make the experience similar to watching a live visual effects demonstration.
Google Glass is the prime example of development in AR technology.
  • AR enhances details by adding graphics, sounds & feedback option to the natural world as it exists.
  • Information is readily available to the consumer in real time with the help of applications either on mobiles, computers, laptops or any other form of media.
  • Business houses can set up stores without actually setting up a physical shop. E.g. Online shopping sites like Amazon, Flipkart, Ebay with no actual shops utilize AR to give you the product experience.
  • Providing weather report of various cities & locations with graphics on a smartphone/device with just the use of an application.
  • Not to forget, sports shows use AR to display scores and stats about the game and players and provide details of the stadium or even history its history.
  • Geo-tracking is possible with the help of AR as it acts as GPS. Location of a restaurant, shop, or a fashion outlet can be tracked within seconds.
  • Various maps can be viewed in real-time or satellite model and the exact location can be found.
  • Doctors too can use AR to get a virtual image of a patient and treat them while performing crucial surgery
AR in film making
Even though the technology is still developing, it has still been successfully used in the areas of 2D &3D animation movies. Movies like the Terminator series, Tron and Minority Report have utilized AR to enable the characters interact with information rather than just reading them in a book or hearing them from another character. The Netherland Film Festival in 2011 created an app with the help of LAYAR to create a 3D surround set of a movie. With the use of this app, a viewer could speak the dialogues of movies, which were filmed on location with the help of speech bubbles, making them unsuspecting actors. Later the data could be used to guide tourists to and from the location.
Augmented Reality (AR) is the latest cutting-edge technology which has enhanced the way film making can be approached. It has provided digital layers of information’s and photos and sounds for each and everything available around in the real world. Video games, cell phones, television are using AR to its maximum potential even at this development stage. They are the driving force for its development. With all the applications and widgets used to get information while on the go, AR is becoming a part of life without even the knowledge of the consumer.

Disney Princes Dress up for Halloween...And They Should Never Change Back!

Disney Princes Dress up for Halloween...And They Should Never Change Back!

By Karly Rayner
Let's face it, the Disney Princes have never been blessed in the costume department. Their looks were clearly a bit of an afterthought compared to the resplendent finery of the Disney Damsels, but luckily Halloween is a time to change all that!
Artist Isiah Stephens has re-imagined our favorite Disney Princes as crazily creative trick-or-treaters, and I don't know about you, but I prefer these looks to the originals.
Bring on the boys!

Aladdin and Abu as Ash and Pikachu

Abu, I choose you!
----------------------------------------------------------

John Smith as Johnny Bravo

Hey there, cutie pants. I'd Poke your Hontas any day!
----------------------------------------------------------

Peter Pan as Link

I always suspected that these guys were wearing the same costume...
----------------------------------------------------------

Prince Nazeen as Captain Jack Sparrow

I wash my hands of this weirdness.
----------------------------------------------------------

Milo Thatch as The Doctor

I guess finding Atlantis would have been a lot easier with a Tardis on hand!
----------------------------------------------------------

Quasimodo as Austin Powers

Just shove some frilly cuffs on and nobody will even notice that hunchback and your years of emotional anguish will dissolve! Groovy, baby!

Newly-Opened Markthal Rotterdam Features Dazzling 36,000 Square-Foot Mural

Newly-Opened Markthal Rotterdam Features Dazzling 36,000 Square-Foot Mural

The Markthal Rotterdam, a covered food market and housing development in the Netherlands, has officially opened after five years of construction. It was designed by Dutch architects MVRDV, and the nearly 312,000 square-foot space looks like it was well worth the wait.
The most striking feature of this arched structure is its colorful mural titled Cornucopia by artists Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam. It wraps around the interior ceiling and occupies over 36,000 square feet of space. Broken up into squares, each part of the image was printed onto perforated aluminium panels that were then attached to acoustic panels for noise control. Its subject matter depicts fresh market produce, as well as flowers and insects that reference the work of Dutch still life masters from the 17th century.
The two lower floors have space for 96 food stalls and 20 hospitality and retail units. In addition, there are 228 apartments that are on the upper nine storeys of the building, including the curved part of the arch. They have square windows or a glass floor built in that allow residents to look at the hustle and bustle of the market.
At either end of the of Markthal Rotterdam, there are giant glazed walls installed to protect it from cold and wet weather but still let light in. It's constructed using pre-stressed steel cables that create a suspended net in-between which the glass panes are hung. This newly-opened attraction is expected to bring in 4.5 to 7 million visitors each year.
